Where: The Waitakere Dam is located in, you guessed it, The Waitakere Ranges in Auckland, New Zealand. (Just off Scenic Drive)
When: Year round! The view of course is beautiful on a clear day however the track down to the dam is concrete, so no mud in the rain!
The Waitakere Dam walk is just the start of a heap of different tracks through the ranges. You start with a 30 minute walk down a sealed drive to the dam. You can stop here if you want for lunch and a great view.
You can then continue on to a summit track to Simla, a tramline track, or a down hill track that joins with the Auckland City walk.
It’s all down hill to the dam so be prepared for the up hill struggle on the way back. Same with the track joining to the Auckland City walk. If you’re a fan of going up hill first, try the Simla track. Although be prepared, there’s nothing but a sign at the top in the middle of a clearing.
This is one of my favourite places to visit and I come here almost every weekend. If I’m feeling tired I’ll just go to the dam but if I’m after a challenge I’ll try one of the other walks.
